授業の目的
The purpose of this course is to understand the recent developments in regional security in the Asia-Pacific. It gives particular attention to the dynamics of regional security order, the role of the major powers including the US, China, Japan, and ASEAN, the role of regional institutions, and various security challenges that this region confronts.
授業の概要・授業計画
This course is divided into two parts.
Part 1: Overview lecture of definitions, historical developments, and background of Asia-Pacific security. (July 27)

Part 2: Student presentations and discussion (September 5-7)
-  Students are required to make a 20-30 minute presentation(s) summarizing the assigned chapter(s) of the required text and providing your comments and discussion points. Students will then discuss each of the issues presented.
-  Students are recommended to familiarize themselves with the policies of their respective countries on their own and use them in your presentations and discussions.
-  Students are also recommended to compare your assigned chapters with other relevant articles and reports in your presentations and discussions.
-  Students must send the electronic files of their presentation papers (talking points) to the lecturer by August 26 via e-mail. The papers will be distributed to the other students participating in this course prior to the second session.
-  Selections of chapter(s) of presentations will be made during Part 1 of this course.
-  Examples of the chapters on which the students are to make presentations:
- Asia-Pacific institutions
- The United States: regional strategies and global commitments
- A rising China and American perturbations
- Hegemony, hierarchy and order
- Democracy and security in East Asia
- Security community-building in the Asia-Pacific
- Human security and global governance
- Nuclear weapons: Asian case studies and global ramifications
- Maritime security: regional concerns and global implications

成績評価の方法・基準
Final grade will be based on presentation papers, presentation(s), and participation in discussion.
